Desertec explained in a recent press release that Saudi Arabia has founded the new organization “Desertec Power” in that country, and that Desertec is looking ahead to cooperating with them.
This makes sense for a couple of reasons.
Saudi Arabia has great desert resources. In contrast to Mongolia, it has money, from exporting oil. It can use that money to win in the race for providing the World with clean desert energy. It has experience with the financial benefits of supplying energy to the World.
And there is already strong support for developing the solar resources of the country. Saudi Arabia plans to invest $109 billion in solar to get 41 GW of capacity, most of that from CSP, over the next twenty years.
And Saudi Arabia even understands that oil is more valuable left in the ground.
The only thing Mongolia still has as an advantage over Saudi Arabia is its perfect location right next to China, where the decisive battle against global meltdown will be fought over the next couple of decades. Saudi Arabia will move ahead much faster, but they won’t export to China any time soon.
I assume the billion $ is american style, not to be mixed up with the german billion in your last post.

Yes. Even the Saudis might have trouble coming up with $109 trillion all on their own. 🙂 That would be more than World GDP…
