My Open Letter to Oyu Tolgoi

Hello,

I am a German national and professor of German and EU law at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.

On my blog I discuss energy matters, including the vision of large-scale renewable energy from the Gobi desert.

My latest post on Oyu Tolgoi is from September 22, titled “Multibillion Oyu Tolgoi Mine Gathering Dust for Lack of Power”, at

I wonder why you still don’t get some solar capacity on your site. It beats your present Diesel generators on price, and your hopes of getting power from China on reliability, and your plans for building your own coal plant on access to cheap finance.

I hear that you are applying for substantial World Bank funds and MIGA guarantees. I am sure building some solar would help with that, as well as with the way the public perceives your environmental impact.

I am posting this as an open letter on my blog. If you respond, please let me know if I can blog about your response as well.

Yours Sincerely

Karl-Friedrich Lenz
