EU – MENA Desertec Treaty

This post at GMF blog reports on statements by Michael Köhler, Head of Cabinet for EU Energy Commissioner Günter Oettinger. Thanks to this tweet by Desertec for the link.

He says the EU is considering setting up another “Energy Charter” with the EU and the Desertec countries as Member States.

That’s an interesting development. The main proposal in  my recent book “Energy from the Mongolian Gobi desert” was exactly that. Set up a “Desert Energy Community”, with the EU, Mongolia, and Japan as Members.

It probably would be easier to set up this kind of Treaty for the Gobi than for Northern Africa and Middle East. The political stability in Mongolia is much better; and the EU will be negotiating with Japan on a Free Trade Agreement anyway.
